Here's a confusing map of Victoria and some written instructions for you! Don't forget to pick up a real map... Anyway you cut it, you’ll have to take a ferry to get to Vancouver Island. (Unless you own one of the amphibious Rampside Pickups made years ago) There are two considerations that need to be weighed when choosing where and how to come across to the island. Which ferry service to use?, and how will that affect our time through Customs? For our Canadian members, coming across means using B.C. Ferries. In August ferries leave Tsawwassen and/or Swartz Bay on the hour between 7:00am through to 10:00pm. It is highly recommended that you ask to travel on “the truck level” as it can mean there will be more space between your ‘vair and the careless door dinger parked next to you. Also, if time is tight and your schedule does not allow for waiting “for the next sailing” you can get a reserved boarding by phone at 1-888-724-5223 for those inside British Columbia, and at 1-604-444-2890 for those from outside the province. Or try www.bcferries.com B.C. Ferries travels more frequently than the other U.S. based ferry services, and the exchange rate is very much in the favour of those paying with U.S. currency. One ‘vair with two passengers is $52.50Cdn or $34.00U.S. The cheaper rate must be weighed against possible delays at the Peace Arch border crossing. Cross when others don’t, and it shouldn’t be a problem. Otherwise, the U.S. based ferries offer a quicker route through Customs if their sailing times coincide with your schedule. The Coho Ferry leaves from Port Angles and comes directly into downtown Victoria. Cost is $47U.S. for one ‘vair and two passengers. Sails four times daily: 8:45am, 12:45pm, 5:15pm & 9:30pm. Go to www.cohoferry.com for more information. The Washington State Ferry leaves Anacortes to Sidney twice daily at 8:15am and 2:00pm, cost is $53.40 for one ‘vair and two adults. Go to www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries or call 260/464-6400 from Seattle or call 888/808-7977 statewide. The Vancouver Island Porsche Club has invited us to join them for their autocross at Western Speedway, Sunday, August 11th. #1) You don’t have to be ‘hard-core-serious-racing-dude’ to enjoy an autocross. These are safe, timed events, with limited speeds, done in a controlled environment. You race around a course of pylons against the clock with no more than one car on the course at any one time. Good news for us is that V.I.P.C.’s course setter likes to use 15ft wide gates, which are great for our long wheel base ‘vairs. #2) You do have to pass a tech inspection. They’ll be looking at brakes, steering and your seatbelts. No roll cage, fuel cells or race slicks are required for this type of event. #3) A helmet not older than 10 years is also required. Don’t worry if you don’t have one, we’ll scrounge one up and share. #4) The entrance fee is $25, which pays for the rental of the track and insurance. It is payable the day of the event. However V.I.P.C. would like to know in advance your intention to attend so that they can make the necessary preparations. Contact Ernie Kowals at 250/477-8914 or email at thekowals@shaw.ca THE CLASSIC CORVAIR - BOOK DEAL: Notification on intent to purchase Bob Helt’s new book, The Classic Corvair must be received by July 9th. Contact Joel at 250/475-6350 or email joel@cybrus.net. Cost is $40 and can be made by mail or at the BBQ on Saturday with your CTD registration. THIS OFFER IS ONLY OPEN TO THOSE ATTENDING CTD TO PICK THEIR BOOKS UP IN PERSON. SUMMARY: CTD can be a one, two or three day event for you this year. The scavenger hunt is designed so that folks that haven't been to Victoria before can get to see the city and some of it's highlights, and then go back to them after the scavenger hunt to see a little more than just a drive by. Make it a long weekend, come over on Friday, do the scavenger hunt, hang out at the pool, see some sites, and then come down for the BBQ. The BBQ begins at 4:30 on Saturday August 10th, and seeing it is a hosted event (so no extra cost to you) I would consider this to be a natural kickoff for the event. However, if you're busy and hardworking, and you live in the lower mainland, there is nothing to stop you from doing what us islanders do every year for CTD, which is get up to catch the first ferry (on August 11th) in this case and just come over for the day, and head home before nightfall. If you're REALLY ambitious you can do CTD and then join Dennis and Bev Ross for a week long cruise through the interior to the Okanagan. There is a registration sheet for this in your newsletter.
See you there! |
