Corvair enthusiasts from all over the Northwest, Alberta and British Columbia will descend on Chilliwack, B.C. May 9th through 11th for the largest Corvair event ever held in Canada.

Two years ago, in Port Townsend, CORSA Northwest was the host for the Econorun, and they put on a fantastic event from start to finish. During the Banquet Western Canada CORSA (WCC) was honoured to receive the "Revolving Revolting Trophy" for our efforts to bring Canadian Corvair enthusiasts together with our growing chapter. During the presentation WCC pledged to host the Econorun at the next available opportunity. As the 2002 was being held by CORSA Oregon, 2003 would be the next available date.

Since then WCC has been hard at work laying out what we hope will be a great time for all involved. Anticipation is already building and folks from all over have been calling and emailing asking for information.

Chilliwack, B.C. was chosen as the site for two main reasons, its proximity to a less used border crossing and it is the site of the Chilliwack Antique Powerland. Holding the Econorun north of the 49th has several advantages, not the least of which is the exchange rate. If you think $74.00 is a great rate for a double room at a Best Western, then you’ll love that price in U.S. dollars, only 50 bucks!

Antique Powerland? HUH? "What’s that?" you ask. It’s a seven acre historical museum that preserves buildings and machinery. The cars will be situated in an around these buildings providing a truly picturesque setting. While not checking out the Corvairs you’ll be able to wander through the Powerland displays of historic trucks and engines, including a 2000+ hp monster.

Check the schedule, but a brief outline of the weekend is: Dinner on the Friday night, followed by a showing of Corvair favourites "From Here to There" and "Daring the Darien", and finishing up with "Fear". Make sure you keep an eye out for the very same Corvair used in the movie "Fear" at the Show and Shine on Saturday!

The main event on Saturday, is of course, the Show and Shine, but there are plenty of other distractions too. Right next door to the site will be Chuckwagon and Barrel races. We’re working on a Tech Session for the Noon lunch that will explain how to prepare your Corvair for a Concours, and an explanation of how the judging process works.

After that we’d like to take you and your Corvair for a cruise that will end with ice cream and a winery tour. Then it’s back to the hotel for the banquet, which will include the awards ceremony and a live auction to help raise funds for the CPF.

Sunday morning there are several options, either a nice Mother’s Day Brunch, or for the adrenaline crowd, wheel to wheel action at a local go-karting track.

Is that everything? Heck no! They’ll be a few other surprises that we’ll keep until you arrive. But guaranteed, WCC members are going to make sure you have a great time.

    E-con-o-run, Econorun, hmmmm, economy run?

So an Econorun is defined as a race that has a thrifty use of fuel. As a matter of face, that is the goal of the race, to see who can use the least amount of fuel. The only thing is, you do your Econorun, before you arrive at the event.

It’s quite simple actually. Before the event you fill up your tank with gas, and you head out on a nice afternoon for a drive. Record your mileage at the fill up, and then drive as close to 100 miles as you can get before you fill up again. Now record you actual miles driven, and the amount of gas needed for your fill up. This information is handed in when you arrive at the Econorun Friday afternoon/evening. Corvairs are divided into various categories depending on their drive train configuration, so that the thirsty turbos don’t compete directly with the thrifty 80hp Ems.

ECONORUN TIPS

Originally printed in the Corvairitis Bulletin two years ago in anticipation of the Pt. Townsend Econorun, these tips could help improve your chances of taking home a trophy at this year’s event.

From Kent Sullivan of CORSA Northwest...

"Well, I’ve never placed very highly because I don’t have the patience... But in general you should:

-Kent Sullivan

For those looking to really push the envelope here are some serious and some not so serious suggestions courtesy of "Monza Myers" of Edmonton, Alberta.

-Bruce "Monza" Myers

And finally, something of a little more technical nature from our California membership.

ECONORUN T-SHIRTS

WCC’s resident artist, Don Ross has created another superb Ed Roth inspired t-shirt that will only be available to Econorun participants. At $25 Cdn it’s hard to pass on this unique tee.

Host Hotel

The Host Hotel is the Best Western Chilliwack Rainbow Country Inn, located just off Hwy 1 at exit 116. (43971 Industrial Way, Chilliwack, V2R 3A4) Those coming from the U.S. are advised to use the Sumas border crossing as it should have the shortest crossing times.

Rates start at the low price of $69Cdn for a single and $74Cdn for a double. (That is approximately $46 to $50U.S.). Call (604) 795-3828 for reservations, and tell them you’re with the Corvair to get our group rate.

As the Econorun falls on the same weekend as Mother’s Day we’d like you to know that you can attend the event, and treat Mom on her special day. The Best Western is holding a Mother’s Day Brunch Sunday morning, and as this went to press the rate was $19.00 pp.
